Santana Champ': It's the real thing, yo!

Two completely disparate things – The Lonely Island and my wedding anniversary – combined to make for one serendipitously awesome moment yesterday evening. Allow me to elaborate…

So yesterday – January 28 – was Dana and my 17 year wedding anniversary. (I know; you’re probably thinking that I’m lying and that there’s no way that I ...

Lessons learned from my 7th CES

Posted on January 25, 2012 at 2:10 PM Comments comments (0)

If my shoddy memory serves, this year’s CES show was my seventh. And while that might feel like an infinity-worth when you are actually the one IN Vegas doing ALL of the walking (and walking and walking...) and writing and eating and drinking, the reality is, in the world of CES show attendance, I am but a babe.

There were many in my press crew that were into double-digit show attendance numbers. Some that can claim the badge of *n...

CES 2012: 17 Superlative-est Things

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 3:35 PM Comments comments (0)

Well, the fat lady has sung, the curtains have been closed and CES 2012 is officially a few days in the bag. After several days of decompressing and detoxing – there is a LOT of drinking in Vegas – and reflecting, I thought I would share my list of Best, Worst, Coolest, and other superlatives from this year’s biggest party in all of electronics.

#1 Best Demo – The Unforgettable Home Theater Experience

CES 2012: Day 4 -- aka Oh, God! Make it stop!

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 4:30 PM Comments comments (2)

I’d like to say that night three ended as awesomely as nights one and two – and it was certainly headed that way – but, alas, it was not to be. Following the awesomeness which was the IOSAFE “Cage of Death!” demo, I dutifully returned to the press room to file my stories like a good little cub reporter before heading over to the Tau Nightclub in Palazzo for dinner with Lutron’s Melissa Andresko and arch-Sciacca Nemesis (and Home Theater Edito...

CES 2012: Day 3 -- aka The Show Floor part 2

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 3:20 PM Comments comments (0)

Day two ended much like day one, with me at a wonderful dinner with some of my best-est press buddies. (Oh, Jeremy G and Glasses; that you could have been there as well...) The good folks at Paradigm – namely Mark Aling and Erin Phillips – are always great fun to hang out with (even when one of them -- OK, it was Erin -- may or may not admit to TOTALLY agreeing to do a Polar Bear Club dip for $50. And, no, Erin, I am *never* letting go of that...) and the restaurant...

CES 2012: Day 2 -- aka The Show Floor part 1

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 12:20 AM Comments comments (0)

Before I start talking about Day 2, a quick recap of my previous evening is in order… (This would be Tuesday night for those keeping score at home.) I ran into Kaleidescape’s product manager, Tom Barnett, and he accompanied me to what is one of my most MUST NOT MISS events of the show, the DEG party. DEG (Digital Entertainment Group) has something-something to do with Blu-ray disc sales and promotion, but the fantastic thing about their event – besides a well-...

CES 2012: Day 1 -- aka Venetian Part 1

Posted on January 16, 2012 at 12:15 AM Comments comments (0)

CES is definitely about time management; there is more than you could see here in a month – what would feel like five lifetimes – let alone four scant eight hour days. With that in mind, I decided to spend my first official CES 2012 show day at the Venetian, which houses many – if not all – of the audio exhibitors as the show. Since waiting for the elevators at the Venetian can rob you of hours of precious time, it is best to go to the top floor – ...

CES Press Day 2012: The Video Stuff

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 10:00 PM Comments comments (0)

The morning press sessions kicking off the '12 CES show included events from LG and Sharp, with an afternoon at Panasonic and a day closer with Sony’s event at its booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center. (Myself and like 1500 other journalists were shut out of the Samsung event. Apparently every person in the entire state of Nevada becomes a journalist and gets a Press Pass for CES and they all came to the Samsung event.) All four manufacturers touted larger screen size...

Vegas, Baby, Vegas

Going to be a quiet-ish week here as I feverishly cover CES for the next few days. It literally just hit me as my first day drew to a close and I had only seen about 10 companies....there is absolutely NO WAY that I am going to see even 25% of what I thought I was going to see. Even if you just spent your entire show looking at audio at The Venetian, you would still not see everything that is JUST at the Venetian. It is the cruel mind game of CES to supply you with hundreds of ...

10 Reasons Why I'm Not Betting On Apple TV

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 5:20 PM Comments comments (4)

Immediately prior to my leaving for CES, I figured it was a good time for a bit of speculation. And nowhere is speculation in the tech world more popular than with Apple (who doesn’t even bother attending CES by the way).

Apple is notoriously one of the most tight-lipped companies around. In fact, the CIA would do well to sit though a two-day “How to keep your mouth shut-the-hell-up!” symposium at the Cupertino headquar...

George did NOT rape your childhood

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 4:35 PM Comments comments (0)

No one raped my childhood, least of all George Lucas. And, quite frankly, if some metaphorical version of George Lucas wanted to have sexual congress with some metaphorical version of my childhood, it would be the most beautiful, consensual of lovemaking.” -- Joe Nussbaum, Director George Lucas in Love

We watched a documentary the other evening entitled “

Duped. Almost.

In retrospect, I can’t believe I didn’t just hang up on the girl. Perhaps it was slow, perhaps I was bored, perhaps I was just curious, perhaps I was feeling some end-of-the-year goodness in my three-sizes-too-small heart. I’m not really sure. But either way, I didn’t hang up and I really only have myself to blame for the waste of time that resulted from it. After all, she violated several of my “
