For years, fathers have been passing things down to their sons. Stories, bits of wisdom, genetic abnormalities, a ceremonial carving knife, that Bulova automatic watch that my mom’s father gave to my dad that he now keeps in his top desk drawer. You know, stuff like that.
One of the things that my dad passed on to me – and that I am now passing on to Lauryn – is: The Salt Shaker Trick. But more on that later…
When we were growing ...Read Full Post »

Last night we went out to the World Market, ostensibly to cash in a punch card for a free 12-ounce bag of coffee beans (the Saeco is insatiable and must be fed a regular diet of quality Columbian beanery).
But after I’ve finished explaining to Therese (is the last “e” silent or not? We’ll likely never know... ) why I was entitled to the free coffee and then she initiates this bizarre, ritualistic procedure of first ringing up a coffee and then re...Read Full Post »

(Alternate title: Diamonds are a John’s Best Friend.)
Older gentleman and his even older wife just strolled into the store. And, to be honest, my first thought was, “Man! Don’t you ever have those days where you just wish that no one would come in?” Actually, this wasn’t a thought. This is pretty much exactly what I said to my partner as I’m reluctantly pulling myself out of my chair, minimizing all manner of non-work related (AOL, ...Read Full Post »

So, now that you know Darryl -- aka the Second Best A/V Editor – nearly as well as I do, I felt I would bring you along the rest of the way. To take you by the hand, as it were, and personally guide you over those final treacherous feet of spiky rocks and spewing liquid hot magma which is crucial to successfully completing your “getting to know Darryl” journey.
Uh, not really.
So, while Darryl and I were in the limo riding to New Hampshi...Read Full Post »

Every industry attracts its fair share of nerdlingers, nut balls and sociopathic weirdoes. For instance, if you’re looking for a heated debate with serious thought and well-reasoned point and counterpoint rhetoric on which Star Trek is the best Star Trek, then head to ANY comic book store. (Or for any derivative discussions such as “who is better, Kirk or Picard," "Who wins in a fight between Superman or Batman,” “DC versus Marvel” or the new classi...Read Full Post »

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned how I was riding the unexpected tsunami gift wave from my parents. The first couple of candles on the Menorah were a new car. (Granted, not new-new, but 10 years newer than my car. But, I already went over this; click the link if you want to know more...)
So, it turns out that, unbeknownst to me, my parents have been t...Read Full Post »

Yesterday started out looking like a giant, beautiful, fun-looking pinata but when I smashed it open, it turned out to be filled with lots of rain, bitter disappointment and despair. And poop. And no iPad.
So after I get home, I find that our swimming pool is literally over-flowing. We have had SO much rain -- I'm guessing more than 7 inches since the pool has gone from normal tile level to cup runneth over onto our deck level -- that the pool now looks like ...Read Full Post »

Remember just a few days ago when I declared that this weekend was to be declared iPad-John Love-in?
So, this is how the day went... I left my store, at about 2 PM and drove to a client's house to deliver a replacement Harmony remote. I tried to hand this menial task off to someone else, but the customer *literally* called and said, "My wife is dying of pancrea...Read Full Post »

Just received a TV delivery – a giga-sized 65-inch Panasonic set that we specifically ordered for a customer because it is dripping in 3D goodness. On the side of the box it says “Step into the 3D world” and shows a father holding his son while the every planet in the universe is cresting around them. Kind of like something that Dave Archer would do if he was forced to sell his soul to corporate Japan, give up the mill...Read Full Post »

I thought that technology had reached its zenith when I was E-marketed with an offer to cast aside my lame, SD lifestyle and step up to the surreality which is living with HD Vision Sun Glasses. They promised that I could live my life just like I’m doing right now, except that it would be better. 1080p times better because it would be in HD. And I just couldn’t imagine that living...Read Full Post »

That time of year is coming up again. The time when thoughts turn to long days indoors, strolling crowded halls filled with men in suits, man-boys in grubby jeans covered with tattoos and with bizarre hair and piercings, and oddly under-dressed, semi-attractive women asking if you'd like a demonstration. That time, of course, is the CEDIA Expo and it is -- sadly -- once again in Atlana this September. (Because nothing says, "Welcome!" like Atlanta at the height of summer humidi...Read Full Post »

Today, August 4th, is my most favorite day of the year.
This is the day that 16 years ago -- Yeeesh! I can't believe it's been that long. Sixteen years! Look at the young people in this picture. They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait ...Read Full Post »

Remember when i said that Home Theaters were better than Swimming Pools? Well, I discovered another reason why my theater (and probably your theater too, that is unless you have some serious hoarder, cleanliness issues; you don't have stacks of old newspapers and rotting food and boxes of cat litter spread around your living room, do you? Because that is going to *serio...Read Full Post »

Well, it's officially ON. After playing with the Control 4 iPad app on Monday, I have decided that our store MUST have one. iPad, you will be mine, you will be mine, you will be mine, all mine. I will be your knight in shining arrrrrrr-mour. Riding across the desert on a fine Arab chaaaaaaar-ger. Coming to your emotional rescue... (It is completely unrelated that as a side ben...Read Full Post »

This couple just walked into our store. A woman who at first I thought she was attractive. Then I saw her again and she wasn’t. Then again later and she kinda was. It was like I was looking at her through a heat-haze of beauty or like one of those weird, texturey 3D pictures where it changes when you move your head from left to right (and if you scratch your fingernail over it it’s all wicka-wicka).
Anyhow, our salesman, Andy, is helping them and I notice that ...Read Full Post »

C4: You had me at iPad!
Just when I thought my yearning for iPad had reached max gross load, with no possible way of adding in even one more droplet of John-love – OK, I do kinda want the front and rear facing cameras for pictures and video chat, the iPhone 4’s better-than-my-eye retina display, the USB port for all my US-Bees, and all the other stuff that his Steve-ness is just holding in reserve for the 2.0 Pad release -- I find a new way to fuel my unnatural affections fo...Read Full Post »

Oh, HDMI… just when you promise that all of your problems are fixed and that we shouldn't have any more bizarre handshaking or copy-protection issues, there you are, lurking just below the surface to give me an unexpected bite on the HDM-Ass!
On the surface HDMI sounds like it would be the greatest thing ever, including sliced bread. (I've no doubt that somewhere out there exists a skilled HDMI artisan/High Plains Drifter/ninja warrior who could actually swing a cable...Read Full Post »
